Abstract

Koskinobullina socialis Cherchi and Schroeder is a fossil microencruster species. Its fossil record has been known since the Norian (Upper Triassic) to the Palaeogene. This paper reports the first record for the Carnian (Upper Triassic), thus extending its stratigraphical range. In addition, the oldest record for Europe is reported. This find corresponds to the platform facies of the Lower Member of the St. Cassian Formation of the Dolomites (NE Italy). Koskinobullina socialis has been considered as an alga and more recently, as foraminifera. This classification is currently valid. Although the preservation state of some samples is not good, it was possible to identify this organism to species level. The presence of this organism is of special ecological relevance in reef environments, as it forms part of encrustation complexes together mainly with microbialites.
