Abstract


We have located the site of one of the few mineral deposits in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha, which is referred to in historical records but whose interest is unrelated to mining. The site is known as Los Jacintos Fountain, near to the city of Toledo. Early descriptions of the mineral deposit dating from the beginning of the seventeenth century report the presence of jacinths, later identified as garnets.

Mineralogical and geochemical studies conducted on these garnets show that their composition is almandine, containing moderate proportions of pyrope and low spessartine, grossular and andradite, and is very similar to that of the garnets from the granulite migmatites of the anatectic complex at Toledo.
