Simulation of Three-Dimensional Variable-Density Ground-Water Flow. Application to seawater intrusion problem in the Cabo Roig aquifer (Alicante-Spain)

The seawater intrusion control on the Cabo Roig coastal aquifer is an important issue in the groundwater management of this zone. Therefore a three-dimensional variable density groundwater flow model (steady state) has been developed, which has made possible to reproduce the piezometry and salinity conditions in the year 2001 and to analyze the effects of possible scenarios of recharge, pumping and management. To develop the seawater intrusion model the FEFLOW v 5.0 code, developed by Diersch (2002), has been used. This code allows to simulate variable density groundwater flow problems, i.e. the seawater intrusion where the groundwater movement is function of hydraulic and concentration gradient. This paper presents the model results for the hydrological conditions 2001 and the analysis of two management scenarios. The seawater intrusion and the submarine groundwater discharge are two fundamental components in the calculation of the water budget of this coastal aquifer.
