Abstract

The La Paz aquifer, is located to the south of Baja California Sur state, Mexico, where has been an intensive groundwater extraction in the last years. This has caused the intrusion of water from the sea towards the aquifer, threatening to the present sources of drinking water supply to the city of La Paz. In order to analyze the effect caused by diverse groundwater management policies in this aquifer was set up a groundwater model to simulate the flow and transport of salinity (sea water). Six scenarios were processed, to analyze different behaviors: 1) Satatus Quo, 2) Relocation of wells, 3) Reassignment of volumes of water, 4) water Interchange, 5) Balance between recharge and extraction; and 6) Follow the inertial tendency. Finally, from the analysis of the six mentioned scenarios, we concluded that no one of them can solve itself the problem of the marine intrusion. Nevertheless, a suitable combination of these scenarios that takes the positive elements from each one, could affect in positive way to stop and probably to seawater intrusion, and to protect water sources for high-priority uses,
