Geomorphic evolution of the Dominican Cordillera Oriental

Cordillera Oriental is the only one mountain system in the Hispaniola eastern sector, acquiring his appereance during Quaternary times. At Pliocene times, region was conformed by small islands in a reef platform of which derived the Llanura Costera del Caribe and Los Haitises. Mountain system uplift was caused by neotectonic activity, linked to “Meridional de Samaná” fault, a family fault system related to their southern limit and the Yabón fault, mainly. The exogenous processes were very intense too, standing out fluvial erosion and lateritic formation in mountain system and karstification in Los Haitises. Miches surface is the most important erosion surface, and correlates with Los Haitises top surface.
