Geometría, cinemática, paleoesfuerzos y modelo tectónico del sistema de fallas extensionales que deforma a las calizas Plio-Pleistocenas en el sureste de la República Dominicana

Se describe un sistema de fallas extensivas de escala regional orientadas NO-SE, NNO-SSE y ENE-OSO que produce un relieve tectónico en semigrabens en las formaciones arrecifales emergidas Plio-Pleistocenas en el sureste de la República Dominicana. Estas fallas constituyen la continuación de un sistema de fallas previamente reconocido en el oeste de Puerto Rico y el Pasaje de la Mona. El análisis de paleoesfuerzos en las fallas que cortan a la caliza del Plioceno permite establecer un esfuerzo mínimo s3 subhorizontal de dirección NE-SO, que cambia a SSO en las fallas que cortan a calizas del Pleistoceno, gradando entre una fracturación normal pura a normal direccional. En contraste, la inversión de los mecanismos focales de los terremotos profundos, intermedios y someros proporciona mecanismos inversos, en dirección y más raramente normales. La extensión en la parte alta de la corteza Caribeña está acompañada de movimientos verticales de elevación y subsidencia de la plataforma de coral en el post-Plioceno. Estos movimientos se han modelado como una placa elástica rota flexionada hacia la fosa e integrado en un modelo más general que incorpora extensión por necking en la lámina Atlántica que subduce. Sin embargo, la actuación de un único mecanismo flexural difícilmente explica la extensión regional observada. Esta última se atribuye mejor a un proceso de rifting difuso dentro del bloque de Puerto Rico-La Española, tal vez causada por la continuidad a baja velocidad del proceso de rotación levógira de Puerto Rico.
