The Baltoniodus triangularis Conodont Zone in the South American Lower-Paleozoic Central Andean Basin: the Alto del Cóndor Formation of northern Argentina

Abstract


The Baltoniodus triangularis Conodont Zone is recorded in the Lower-Paleozoic Central Andean Basin. This bio zone is recorded in the Cordillera oriental of northwest Argentina and includes a conodont association composed of Baltoniodus triangularis (Lindström), Drepanoistodus basiovalis Sergeeva, Erraticodon patu Cooper, Gothodus costulatus Lindström, Trapezognathus diprion (Lindström), T. quadrangulum Lindström, Baltonio cf. B. triangularis (Lindström), Oistodus sp., Triangulodus sp., amongst others. This finding records the lowest Dapingian (Middle ordovician) stage within the Alto del Cóndor Formation, cropping out at the Los Colorados area of Jujuy province, Argentina. The recovered conodont association allows us to identify a greater affinity with the North Atlantic and southern China Faunal Provinces.
