Structural analysis of seismically oriented damage caused by the Lorca earthquake of 11 May 2011: Application to archaeoseismology

A study of the orientation of the damage occurring in instrumental earthquakes allows us to calibrate and improve archaeoseismic analytical methods. These methods are based on an analysis of the predominant trends of damage occurring to an archaeological site or historic building in such a way as to allow us to analyse the possible seismic origin of the deformations in question. An analysis of the orientation of the damage caused by the earthquake at Lorca on 11 May 2011 has led to our being able to calibrate these methods. The results of the analysis of the structures show a clearly homogeneous NW-SE trend of maximum deformation. This orientation is almost perpendicular to the orientation of the fault and also coincides with the orientation of the horizontal displacement vectors, as deduced from the accelerograph of the National Geographic Institute seismic station sited at the city centre in Lorca. The trends of maximum deformation reveal that the presence of different tectonic structures may lead to variations in damage orientation.
