Abstract

We describe here the main results from geotechnical lab tests (index properties and consolidation parameters) in soil samples from recent Quaternary deposits known as ‘brickearth’. These Quaternary sediments were deposited during the last periglacial stage in Europe and lie unconformably upon Tertiary rocks. They are similar in character to loess-type deposits found elsewhere in the world. The main oedometric results reveal a problematic soil because of its collapsible properties, which may give rise to sinking of between 4.3 and 5.5 cm.
