Beds and cycles in cyclo-stratigraphy

Two well-known geological terms, the bed and the cycle are discussed. The bed is the smallest litho-stratigraphic unit defined by its composition and shape and in particular its thickness. Stratigraphic cyclicity deals with the order in which beds are repeated. Both composition and thickness of beds have to be repeated with at least statistical probability. Process cyclicity deals with the processes that are responsible for cycles. Cycles are intervals of the stratigraphic sequence that must be identical at the beginning and end. An example of a Cretaceous marl limestone series demonstrates the use of the two terms.
