The effects of the 2011 Lorca earthquake on religious architectural heritage; analysis and lessons for future emergencies

I present the results of my analysis of old belonging to the religious heritage of the city of Lorca and their behaviour in the face of the stress induced by earthquakes, emphasizing the quality of the constructions and the serious damage sustained by those previously repaired with rigid reinforced concrete. My analysis focuses, on the one hand, upon a study of the most common syndromes of seismic events, such as captured columns, pounding of adjacent buildings and the collapse of soft ground floors, and on the other, upon the predominant directions of deformations in the churches. Explanations are offered for each collapse, and the main response mechanisms of each element or part of the buildings (vaults, arches, domes, walls and so on).
