We have collected information from primary textual sources concerning the exploitation and marketing of pearls between the second century B.C. and the tenth century A.D. Our research includes the biological origin of the pearl, the production areas and harvesting techniques, and its trading. Finally, to understand more fully the great social status of the pearl we examine the ideological value with which it was imbued, a value which drove its exploitation.
