Abstract

We have studied the origin and petrological characteristics of the amphibolite used in the construction of some Romanesque churches in the area of Villafranca del Bierzo and Corullón, in the Bierzo region of León. It is the main component of the church of St. Fiz of Visonia on the banks of the Burbia river. Having found no references in the literature to the presence of this rock in the immediate area, we undertook a search in the vicinity of the church of St. Fiz of Visonia to see whether we could locate the source outcrop of the rock and found the quarry scarcely 2 km away from the church. The amphibolites in question derive from the transformation of alkaline basaltic rocks interbedded in the Cabos formation as a result of metamorphic and tectonic processes which took place during the Variscan orogeny.
