Abstract

Preliminary results on the use of the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index - TVDI (Sandholt et al., 2002) for assessing the environmental determining factor of vegetation water stress in the rio Dos Sinos basin -Brazil- are presented. The TVDI is estimated from information captured by satellites, and is based on the surface temperature (Ts) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The obtained TVDI values were calculated from images of the AVHRR sensor, NOANN series, and were analyzed with respect to the monthly precipitation, and it was found that there were natural boundaries of water stress related to rainfall. The TVDI shows a great deal of variation between winter and summer, whereas some places display slight or null variations along the year.
