The scientific production published during the last 20 years in the Boletín Geológico y Minero is an indicator of scientific activity. The growth of scientific research can be determined by the number of papers published, their evolution over time, their authorship, institutions and geographical areas. A study of the Boletín provides a good idea of the degree of collaboration between researchers or institutions and the structure and dynamics of the groups who publish their results in it. This paper is based upon the selection and evaluation of relevant documents, and the description, analysis and assessment of scientific activity and those involved in it. The study applies bibliometric techniques to describe the content of the Boletín during the last two decades. It also relates, on the one hand, the different authorships (identifying informal research groups) and, on the other, the collaboration of the Institute with other entities throughout the world. Furthermore, the work analyses ten subject groups and the activity within these groups from year to year, as well as the levels of consistency among the volumes according to the parameters of authorship, the descriptors used in the indexing of documents and their subject groups. The basis of this study rests upon the 789 papers published for the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the pages of the Boletín Geológico y Minero. The study of the dynamics of the social network in terms of co-authorship provides evidence for the existence of active groups of authors and collaboration between informal research groups.
